Pearson Education - Nursing Neighborhood 2.0

Location

Centennial, Colorado

Date

September 2008

Role

Web Developer

Project type

e-Learning

Nursing Neighborhood is a college course for students interested in the profession and wanting to get a broad overview of the types of healthcare and the role of nursing.

Initially, the project was to simply move all of the existing content into a new platform. The original course was built with Adobe Flash. Apple said it would not allow Adobe's Flash plug-in on its mobile phone operating system for security reasons. That was the death knell for the Flash platform. The development team selected PHP/MySQL DB for the new platform.

The project stakeholders decided they wanted to review and maybe rewrite some of the family stories from the original project. That was the beginning of an enormous explosion of the project's scope. Everything was redone, graphics, videos, photos, stories. Everything.

A four-month project was expanded into a 17 month project. We were a team of seven people, a project manager, 3 web developers, 2 graphics designers, and the product manager. There was nothing in place for managing all of the content changes, so I took on the additional role of project content manager. I developed a MS Word template for technical writers to use. The template included every element of what end-users would see on each screen.

Towards the end of the project we needed to track typos, missing commas, and missing or misplaced images. I employed JIRA for recording, assigning, and completing each episode's review.
